Bloomingburg is a small village located in Sullivan County, in the state of New York, United States. It was once known as Bloomingburgh. In 2020, about 1,032 people lived there. It is part of the town of Mamakating, New York.

History of Bloomingburg

Bloomingburg officially became a village in 1833. It was important because it was the first "county seat" for Sullivan County. A county seat is like the main town where the government offices are located.

Early Growth and Commerce

The village grew a lot because it was on the Newburgh–Cochecton Turnpike. A turnpike was an old toll road. People paid to use it to travel and move goods. This made Bloomingburg a busy place for trade. Later, it became a "railway town." This meant trains brought many people, especially vacationers, to the mountains nearby. Many guesthouses were built for these visitors.

The Great Fire of 1922

Sadly, a big fire happened in February 1922. It destroyed many of the guesthouses in the village. After the fire, many of these buildings were not rebuilt. Since then, Bloomingburg has mostly been a farming community.

Historic Landmark

The Bloomingburg Reformed Protestant Dutch Church is a very old building in the village. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it is a special place that is protected because of its history.
