The Name of Bloomsdale
The name of Bloomsdale most likely comes from a Catholic priest named Father Blume. "Blume" is a German word that means "flower."
Bloomsdale's History
Bloomsdale was known as early as 1839 by a different name. It was called "La Fourche à Duclos," which means "the fork of Duclos." This name came from a nearby creek.
A local priest, Father Blume, wanted his church members to live closer together. So, he bought land on what is now called Establishment Creek. He moved the settlement to the current location of Bloomsdale.
One story says that when the town's name was sent to Washington, D.C., for a post office, it was hard to read. The story goes that Washington then called the office Bloomsdale. It is more likely that the German name Blume was changed to Bloom. Either way, the name honors Father Blume.
