Exploring Blue Diamond

This community has many useful places for its residents. You can find a park, a private swimming pool, and a library. There is also an elementary school, an event hall, and a church.

The Old General Store

Blue Diamond has a special general store, also called a mercantile. It also has a gas station. This store was built way back in 1942. It used to sell everyday items to the people living there. Most of these early residents were miners. The store still looks much like it did when it first opened. Inside, you can see many old photos of the town. These pictures are shared by the Blue Diamond Historical Society.

Blue Diamond's History

Blue Diamond is built near a place called Cottonwood Spring. This spring was once known as Ojo de Cayetana, or Pearl Spring. It was a very important spot for travelers. People used it as a watering place and a camp site.

Important Trails of the Past

Cottonwood Spring was on two famous old routes:

These trails connected different areas, like Mountain Springs and Las Vegas Springs. The spring itself is located on a mountainside.

From Mine to Town

A gypsum mine near Blue Diamond was bought in 1923. It was purchased by the Blue Diamond Corporation of California. Gypsum is a soft mineral used to make things like plaster and wallboard. In 1941, the company opened a factory there to make wallboard.

The company then started building a special kind of town in 1942. This was a "company town." It meant the company owned most of the homes and businesses. The small village of Cottonwood became known as Blue Diamondville that same year. A post office opened under this new name. Later in 1942, the name was changed to just Blue Diamond.
