Mountain Springs is a small, quiet community in southern Nevada. It's not a city with its own government, but rather a place where people live in Clark County. This community sits high up in the Spring Mountains, right on a mountain pass called Mountain Springs Summit. Highway 160, a main road, goes through here, connecting the big city of Las Vegas with the town of Pahrump. In Mountain Springs, you'll find a fire station and a saloon.
History of Mountain Springs
Early Explorations and Trails
In the spring of 1844, an expedition led by John C. Frémont made an important discovery. They found a shorter way to travel between Resting Springs and the Virgin River. This new path was called the Fremont Cutoff.
This shortcut was part of the Old Spanish Trail. It went over the Spring Mountains at Mountain Springs Summit. This pass connected the Pahrump Valley with the Las Vegas Springs in the Las Vegas Valley.
The Mormon Road
After 1848, wagon trains began using this route. They were traveling on the Mormon Road between Southern California and Salt Lake City, Utah. The summit was named after a nearby watering spot. This place, called Mountain Springs, was a good spot for camping. It had a natural spring at the top of the pass.
