Robert Barrett Boyd (born March 7, 1928 – died May 14, 2009) was an amazing American athlete. He was a professional American football player. Bob played as an end and defensive back in the National Football League (NFL). He spent his entire eight-season career with the Los Angeles Rams.

Bob Boyd was also a talented track and field star. He even won a national championship in college. His football career included a fantastic season in 1954. During that year, he led the entire NFL in receiving yards.

Who Was Bob Boyd?

Bob Boyd was born in Riverside, California. He grew up loving sports. He attended Riverside Polytechnic High School. After high school, he went to Loyola Marymount University in California.

College Sports Star

At Loyola, Bob was a two-sport athlete. He played football for the Loyola Lions. He also ran track and field. In 1950, he achieved something incredible. Bob won the 100-yard dash at the NCAA Championships. This showed he was one of the fastest college athletes in the country.

Joining the NFL Rams

Even though he wasn't picked in the NFL draft, Bob joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1950. He played as an end, which is similar to today's wide receiver. He also played as a defensive back. This meant he played on both offense and defense. Playing both ways was common in football during that time.

His Best NFL Season

Bob Boyd's most successful year was the 1954 NFL season. He caught 53 passes that year. These catches gained him an amazing 1,212 yards. He also scored 6 touchdowns. His 1,212 receiving yards led the entire NFL. This made him the top receiver in the league for that season.

Because of his outstanding performance, Bob received special honors. He was named a first-team All-Pro player. This means he was considered one of the best players in the league. He was also chosen to play in the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl is an all-star game for the NFL's best players.

After Football

Bob Boyd played for the Los Angeles Rams for eight seasons. He retired from professional football after the 1957 season. In 1986, his achievements were recognized by his college. He was inducted into the Loyola Marymount Hall of Fame. Bob Boyd passed away on May 14, 2009, at the age of 81.
