Robert Stanford Brown (born December 8, 1941 – died June 16, 2023) was an amazing American football player. People called him "the Boomer." He played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for ten years, from 1964 to 1973. He was picked second overall in the 1964 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Bob Brown also played for the Los Angeles Rams and the Oakland Raiders. He was so good that he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Early Life and College Football Star

Bob Brown was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 8, 1941. He went to East Technical High School. After high school, he played college football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

In 1961, Bob Brown was a backup player for the Cornhuskers. He played as an offensive lineman and an outside linebacker. In 1962, he became a regular starter. He helped his team win their first ever bowl game in 1962, making an important interception in the final minute. In 1963, he was chosen as a unanimous All-American player. This means every major college football group agreed he was one of the best players. He helped Nebraska win their first conference championship since 1940. He was also the first Black All-American player for the Cornhuskers.

Professional Football Career

Bob Brown was chosen very early in the 1964 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was the second player picked overall! He signed a contract with the Eagles that included a big bonus of $100,000.

After his first year in 1964, Bob Brown was named the NFL Rookie of the Year. He was so good that he was chosen for the Pro Bowl in 1965 and 1966 while playing for the Eagles. The Pro Bowl is a special game where the best players from different teams play against each other.

In 1969, Bob Brown asked to be traded from the Eagles. He then joined the Los Angeles Rams. In 1971, he was traded again, this time to the Oakland Raiders. While with the Raiders in 1971, he was part of an amazing offensive line. There were five players on that line who would later be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame!

Bob Brown was named a first-team All-Pro five times during his ten years in the NFL. Being "All-Pro" means you are considered one of the best players in your position in the entire league. He was also chosen for the Pro Bowl six times in total.
