Robert Lathan Calhoun (born July 22, 1937 – died August 6, 2020) was a lawyer from Alexandria, Virginia. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served on the Alexandria City Council and in the Senate of Virginia.
Early Life and Education
Robert Lathan Calhoun was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on July 22, 1937. He went to college at Tufts University, graduating in 1959. Later, he studied law at Yale Law School and finished in 1963.
Political Career
In 1975, Robert Calhoun was elected to the Alexandria City Council. This is a group of people who help run the city. He served two terms, each lasting three years.
He ran for the City Council again in 1984 and won. He served there until December 12, 1988. On that day, he was elected to the Senate of Virginia in a special election. He represented the 30th Senate District. This district included most of Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County.
He served part of one term and then a full term in the Virginia Senate. In 1995, he ran for re-election but was defeated. The mayor of Alexandria, Patsy Ticer, won the election instead.
After his time in the Senate, he became a director for the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. He held this position from 1997 to 2003. He also continued to work as a lawyer in Alexandria, Virginia.
Robert Calhoun passed away on August 6, 2020, in Berryville, Virginia. He was 83 years old.
