Bob Perry was a professional baseball player. He played for the Los Angeles Angels in Major League Baseball. He was an outfielder and played in 131 games. Bob was born in New Bern, North Carolina. He was 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds. He threw and batted right-handed.
Early Baseball Career
Bob Perry started his baseball journey in 1953. He signed with the New York Giants team. For ten years, he played in their "farm system." This means he played for their minor league teams. He was a great hitter, hitting 30 home runs in one season. He also hit 20 or more home runs in four other seasons.
In 1963, the San Francisco Giants (who used to be the New York Giants) sold his contract. Bob then joined the Los Angeles Angels.
Playing for the Angels
Bob Perry joined the Angels on May 16, 1963. The very next day, he played his first Major League game. He was 28 years old and played at Yankee Stadium. In that game, he got one hit against pitcher Jim Bouton.
During the 1963 season, Bob played in 61 games. He started 23 games as the right fielder. He also started 19 games as the center fielder. He finished the season with a batting average of .253. He had 42 hits in total.
In 1964, Bob played even more games, appearing in 70. He was the starting center fielder in 55 of those games. His batting average improved to .276. He also spent some time playing for the Triple-A Hawaii Islanders team.
End of Major League Career
The 1964 season was Bob Perry's last in Major League Baseball. In 1965, the Angels traded him to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, Bob played the rest of his career in the minor leagues. He hit over 200 home runs during his minor league career. He stopped playing baseball in 1970, when he was almost 36 years old.
