A Look at Boca's Past

Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Boca barrio, along with a nearby area called Indios barrio, had a combined population of 782 people.
