The Boeing 737 MAX is a new series of Boeing 737 airplanes. It is built by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in the United States. These planes are designed to replace the older Boeing 737 Next Generation family. The 737 MAX is the fourth main type of the 737 aircraft.
The biggest change in the 737 MAX is its new, more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B engines. The outside of the plane also has some updates. The first 737 MAX was delivered in 2017. This was 50 years after the very first Boeing 737 flew. Boeing received many orders for the 737 MAX, showing how popular it was.
After two serious accidents involving MAX 8 planes in 2018 and 2019, aviation groups around the world asked airlines to stop flying the MAX 8 and MAX 9. This was done until the causes of the accidents could be fully understood.

Developing the 737 MAX
Since 2006, Boeing had been thinking about creating a brand new airplane to replace the 737.
In 2010, another big airplane maker, Airbus, announced its Airbus A320neo family. This was an improved version of their popular Airbus A320 family. Many airlines, like AirAsia and IndiGo, started ordering a lot of these new Airbus planes.
Because of this competition, Boeing decided to develop the 737 MAX on August 30, 2011. Boeing said their new 737 MAX would use less fuel than the Airbus A320 and even a bit less than the A320neo. Boeing also believed the 737 MAX could fly farther than the Airbus A320neo.
The 737 MAX comes in different sizes. The main types are the 737 MAX 7, 737 MAX 8, and 737 MAX 9. The MAX 7 replaced the 737-700, the MAX 8 replaced the 737-800, and the MAX 9 replaced the 737-900ER. These older models were the most popular ones in the 737 Next Generation family.
Many airlines quickly placed orders for the new 737 MAX. For example, Southwest Airlines ordered 150 planes in 2011. By December 2011, Boeing had received 948 orders from 13 different airlines. Airlines from Europe, Australia, and other parts of the world also placed large orders for the 737 MAX.
How the 737 MAX is Designed
The Boeing 737 MAX has new CFM International LEAP-1B engines. These engines are bigger than the ones on the older 737s. Because the engines are larger, Boeing had to make some changes to the plane's landing gear. This was to make sure the engines were high enough off the ground.
The new engines help the 737 MAX use 10–12% less fuel than the previous 737 models. This makes the plane more efficient. Boeing also looked at other parts of the plane to reduce drag and save even more fuel.
The 737 MAX has special new parts on its wings called winglets. These winglets are different from the ones on older 737s. Boeing says these new winglets help the plane use 1.5% less fuel.
Inside, the 737 MAX features the "Boeing Sky Interior." This cabin design is similar to the one found in the larger Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It has a modern look and feel. Boeing wanted the cockpit of the 737 MAX to be very similar to the older 737s. This helps pilots who already fly 737s learn to fly the MAX easily.
Types of Boeing 737 MAX
- 737 MAX 7 – This version replaces the Boeing 737-700.
- 737 MAX 8 – This version replaces the Boeing 737-800.
- 737 MAX 9 – This version replaces the Boeing 737-900ER.
- 737 MAX 10 – This is the largest version in the MAX family.

- Southwest Airlines (United States)
- Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norway)
- Lion Air (Indonesia)
- United Airlines (United States)
