The Bombing of Jaén was an air attack on the city of Jaén in Spain. It happened on April 1, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War. The attack was carried out by the Condor Legion, a group of pilots and planes from Nazi Germany. They were fighting to support the rebel side in the war. The bombing was ordered by General Queipo de Llano. It was done as a way to get back at the Republican side for an earlier air raid on the city of Córdoba.
The Attack
On April 1, 1937, six German Ju 52 bomber planes took part in the attack. They were part of the Nationalist Air Force. Six Heinkel He 51 and three CR 32 fighter planes flew with them. They bombed the city of Jaén.
Jaén did not have any important military targets. It also had no defenses against air attacks. The bombing caused many deaths and injuries among the people living there. About 159 civilians died, and hundreds more were hurt. This event was similar to the Bombing of Guernica, which happened about a month later.
What Happened Next
After the bombing, the local authorities on the Republican side responded. They took strong measures against some prisoners they were holding.
