Boney Kapoor, whose full name is Achal Surinder Kapoor, was born on November 11, 1953. He is a famous Indian film producer. He mainly works in Hindi movies, but also in Tamil and Telugu films.

Early Life and School

Boney Kapoor was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Surinder Kapoor, was also a film producer in Bollywood. Boney's family moved from Peshawar because of the 1947 partition of India.

He grew up in a Punjabi Hindu family. His younger brothers, Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor, are both actors and producers. Boney went to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School. He also studied at St Xavier's College in Mumbai.

Producing Movies

Starting His Film Journey

Boney Kapoor began his career learning from famous directors like Shakti Samanta. He helped with editing on the film The Great Gambler in 1979. He even had a small, uncredited role as a body double for Amitabh Bachchan.

Even though he started in films, Boney Kapoor was not always interested in movies. He first wanted to work in a yarn-trading company.

Mr. India (1987)

One of the most famous films Boney Kapoor produced is Mr. India. This science fiction movie was directed by Shekhar Kapur. It starred his brother Anil Kapoor and his future wife Sridevi.

Mr. India was a huge hit in 1987. It is still a very popular movie in India today. The film is known for its famous lines and songs. Sridevi's "Miss Hawa Hawaii" performance was loved by many. Also, Amrish Puri's line "Mogambo khush hua" (meaning 'Mogambo is pleased') became very famous.

The music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal was also very popular. The song "Hawa Hawaii" is still well-known. Mr. India is often listed among the best Bollywood films. It was named one of the 100 Greatest Indian Films of All Time. It was also one of the highest-earning movies of 1987.

Other Films in the 1980s and 1990s

Boney Kapoor produced other early films like Hum Paanch (1980). This movie helped actors like Mithun Chakraborty and Amrish Puri become famous.

Kapoor also helped many big stars start their careers. His film Woh Saat Din launched his brother Anil Kapoor. Prem launched his younger brother Sanjay Kapoor and actress Tabu. Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe launched actress Esha Deol.

In 1993, he produced Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja. This was one of the most expensive Hindi films at the time. In 1997, he produced the hit movie Judaai. It starred Sridevi and Anil Kapoor again, along with Urmila Matondkar.

Kapoor also managed his brother Anil's career for a long time. In 2000, he produced Pukar. This film starred Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, and Om Puri. Pukar was praised by critics and did well at the box office. It won two National Film Awards.

Company (2002)

In 2002, Boney Kapoor produced Company. This film was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. It starred Ajay Devgan, Mohanlal, and Vivek Oberoi.

The movie was about the Mumbai underworld. It was loosely based on a real Indian mafia group. Company received good reviews from critics and audiences. It won many awards, including six Filmfare Awards. The film was also praised at international film festivals.

Company is the second film in the Gangster series. It is seen as one of the most important movies of its time. It also helped create a new style of filmmaking called Mumbai noir.

Later Hits in the 2000s

His 2004 film Run did not do well at first. However, it later became a cult classic because of its funny scenes. One famous scene is the "Kauwa Biryani" scene with Vijay Raaz.

After Run, he produced the comedy film No Entry in 2005. This movie became Bollywood's biggest hit of that year. It earned a lot of money and was very popular.

In 2009, Kapoor produced Wanted starring Salman Khan. This film broke many box office records. It was the second highest-earning Bollywood film of 2009. Wanted had a great start and earned a lot of money in its first week. It also set new records in Pakistan for an Indian film.

South Indian Films

Boney Kapoor bought the rights to remake the 2016 Hindi film Pink in Tamil and Telugu. In 2019, he produced the Tamil version called Nerkonda Paarvai. This film was a big success with both critics and audiences.

Later, in 2021, he produced the Telugu version of Pink called Vakeel Saab. This film starred Pawan Kalyan. Vakeel Saab had the highest opening day earnings in India after the COVID-19 pandemic. These two films were his first productions in Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Other Work

Acting Roles

In 2023, Boney Kapoor made his acting debut in the film Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. He played a supporting role as the father of Ranbir Kapoor's character. In 2020, he also appeared as himself in the film AK vs AK.

Cricket Interest

Boney Kapoor also enjoys cricket. He is the owner of the Bengal Tigers team in the Celebrity Cricket League.

Personal Life

Boney Kapoor was married to Mona Shourie Kapoor from 1983 to 1996. They had two children: Arjun Kapoor, born in 1985, and Anshula, born in 1990. Arjun became an actor and made his debut in the 2012 movie Ishaqzaade.

Boney Kapoor married Indian actress Sridevi on June 2, 1996. They had two daughters: Janhvi Kapoor, born in 1997, and Khushi Kapoor, born in 2000. Sadly, Sridevi passed away in Dubai on February 24, 2018. The Kapoor family of Prithviraj Kapoor are also distant relatives of Boney Kapoor's family.
