Anil Kapoor (born 24 December 1956) is a famous Indian actor and producer. He has worked in many Hindi films, Indian TV shows, and even international movies. For over 40 years, Anil Kapoor has acted in more than 100 films. Since 2005, he has also been a film producer. He has won many awards, including two National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards.

Anil Kapoor started his acting journey with a small role in Hamare Tumhare (1979). He then starred in films in other Indian languages like Telugu and Kannada. He became a big star with the movie Mashaal (1984). He then starred in many hit action films like Meri Jung (1985), Mr. India (1987), and Ram Lakhan (1989).

Some of his other successful movies include Beta (1992), Laadla (1994), and No Entry (2005). He won a National Film Award for his role as an army man in Pukar (2000). He also won a special award for producing Gandhi, My Father (2007). Anil Kapoor has also played important supporting roles in films like Taal (1999), Welcome (2007), and Animal (2023).

Anil Kapoor was born on December 24, 1956, in Chembur, Mumbai. His father, Surinder Kapoor, was a film producer. Anil is the second of four children. His elder brother, Boney Kapoor, is also a film producer. His younger brother, Sanjay Kapoor, is an actor.

Anil Kapoor went to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School in Chembur. He later studied at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.

Acting Career Highlights

Anil Kapoor first appeared in a film in 1970. He played a younger version of another actor's character in Tu Payal Mein Geet. However, this film was never released in cinemas.

Early Roles and Breakthrough

Anil Kapoor made his official Hindi film debut in Hamare Tumhare (1979). He had a small role in this movie. In 1980, he played a lead role in the Telugu film Vamsa Vruksham. He also appeared in two more Hindi films that year.

His first lead role in a Hindi film was in Woh Saat Din (1983). He became well-known in Bollywood with Yash Chopra's action drama Mashaal (1984). For this film, he won his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. His unique style in the movie became very popular.

In 2000, Anil Kapoor played a double role in Bulandi. He won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for Pukar (2000). He also gave a powerful performance in Nayak (2001).

In 2002, he starred in Badhaai Ho Badhaai. He also appeared with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in Armaan (2003). In 2005, he starred in the super-hit comedy No Entry. This film was the highest-grossing movie of that year.

In 2013, he became the first Indian actor to be invited for a special talk at the Toronto International Film Festival. From 2013, he starred in the Indian remake of 24, playing the lead role of Jai Singh Rathod.

In 2015, he starred in the family comedy-drama Dil Dhadakne Do. This movie was a commercial success and received good reviews. For this role, he won his third Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2022, he starred in the comedy-drama Jugjugg Jeeyo. His performance in this film earned him his fourth Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also starred in Fighter (2024).

Producing Films

In 2002, Anil Kapoor produced his first film, the comedy Badhaai Ho Badhaai, in which he also acted. He then produced My Wife's Murder (2005) and Gandhi, My Father (2007). Gandhi, My Father won a National Film Award.

He also produced Shortkut: The Con Is On and Aisha (2010). Aisha starred his daughter Sonam Kapoor.

Anil Kapoor bought the rights to remake the American TV series 24 in India. He also played the main character, Jack Bauer, in the Indian version.

Singing in Movies

Anil Kapoor has sometimes sung songs for his movies. One of his first songs was the title track of Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986). He also sang "Tere Bina Main Nahin Mere Bina Tu Nahin" for Woh Saat Din. He is also credited for the song "I Love You" from Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai. In 2008, he provided a special dialogue for his character's theme song in Tashan.

Personal Life

In 1984, Anil Kapoor married Sunita Bhavnani, who is a costume designer. They have two daughters and one son. Their elder daughter, Sonam Kapoor (born 1985), is an actress. Their younger daughter, Rhea Kapoor (born 1987), is a film producer. Their son, Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor (born 1990), is also an actor. His children often call him ‘AK’.
