Bonneville is a small community in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's part of the county but doesn't have its own local mayor or city council. Bonneville is located right on Interstate 84 and the famous Columbia River.
The area is most well-known because it's home to the massive Bonneville Dam. If you look across the Columbia River from Bonneville, you'll see North Bonneville, Washington.
History of Bonneville
Long before the huge dam was built, Bonneville was a popular spot for picnics. People living along the Columbia River, between Portland and The Dalles, loved to visit. The railroad company even had a special "eating house" there for travelers.
The Bonneville railroad station was named after a famous explorer, Benjamin Bonneville. However, the name "Bonneville" didn't show up on maps until the late 1880s. The Bonneville post office, which handles mail, was officially set up in the year 1900.
Climate in Bonneville
Bonneville experiences a type of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. It's a pleasant climate for many outdoor activities.
