About Boondina Conservation Park

When Was Boondina Park Created?

Boondina Conservation Park became a protected area on November 11, 1993. It was first part of a larger area called the Yumbarra Conservation Reserve. This reserve was set up under a law called the Crown Lands Act 1929.

Later, in 2006, some of this land was officially made into Boondina Conservation Park. This helped to give it even stronger protection.

What Does "Boondina" Mean?

The name "Boondina" comes from the local Aboriginal people. It is a native name that is important to the area. The name is connected to local water sources, which are very important in this dry region.

How is Boondina Park Managed?

Since 2013, Boondina Conservation Park has been managed as part of a bigger group of protected areas. These are known as the Yellabinna Reserves. This group also includes Pureba Conservation Park and Yumbarra Conservation Park.

The main goal is to protect over three million hectares of mallee woodland. Mallee woodland is a type of forest with small, multi-stemmed eucalyptus trees. The park is managed by the Department for Environment and Water.

Visiting Boondina Park

Boondina Conservation Park does not have any special facilities for visitors. There are no places to camp or picnic. You also cannot drive public vehicles into the park.

Mining in the Park

Even though it is a protected area, mineral exploration and mining are allowed in Boondina Conservation Park. This means companies can look for and dig up minerals there.

Working with Aboriginal Communities

In 2013, an agreement was signed between the Far West Coast Aboriginal Corporation and the Government of South Australia. This agreement helps manage Yumbarra Conservation Park. It also means the corporation gives advice on how to manage Boondina Conservation Park and other reserves in the west of the state.

This agreement allows Aboriginal people to hunt and gather food in the park. This is a traditional right that is important to their culture.

What Kind of Protected Area is it?

Boondina Conservation Park is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area. This means it is a protected area where people can use natural resources in a sustainable way. The main goal is to protect the environment while also allowing some activities that support local communities.
