Booyong is a small area in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is partly in Byron Shire and partly in the City of Lismore.
The name "Booyong" comes from a special tree called the Booyong, also known as the ironwood tree. For counting people, Booyong is grouped with the nearby village of Clunes.
Booyong is home to the Booyong Flora Reserve. This reserve is now part of the Andrew Johnston Big Scrub Nature Reserve. These are special protected areas where you can find a very rare plant called Isoglossa eranthemoides. This plant is in danger of disappearing.
The area is also located on the North Coast railway line. You can still see the railway tracks, bridges, and the platform from the old Booyong railway station. However, there are no station buildings left.
Booyong's History
The first people to live in the Booyong area were the Bundjalung people. They are the traditional owners of this land. The name Booyong comes from the ironwood tree, which was important to the area.
In 2010, something amazing happened in Booyong. The biggest water gum tree in the Southern Hemisphere was found here. This giant tree is located inside the Booyong Flora Reserve. It was added to the National Register of Big Trees because of its impressive size.
