Borve (which is Borgh in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village. You can find it on the west coast of Barra, an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The Outer Hebrides are a chain of islands off the west coast of mainland Scotland. Borve is located right on the A888, which is the main road that goes all the way around the island.

Borve's Ancient Past

The ancient stone mound at Dun Bharpa

Borve is a place with a very long history! Close by, you can find many old things left behind by people from the Neolithic period. This was a time thousands of years ago, when people first started farming. These ancient remains include a burial cairn, which is a large mound of stones built over a grave. There are also tall standing stones.

In 1862, something very exciting was discovered near Borve at a spot called Ardvouray. Archaeologists found a rich Viking burial site! The Vikings were brave explorers and warriors from Scandinavia who traveled across the seas a long time ago. The items found in this special grave are now kept safe in the British Museum in London.

What Was Found in the Viking Grave?

The Viking grave at Ardvouray was full of interesting objects. These included:

  • A pair of oval brooches, which were like large pins used to fasten clothes.
  • A comb, probably made of bone or antler.
  • Pieces of a drinking horn, used for special drinks.
  • A spear, which was a weapon.
  • A pair of shears, like large scissors.
  • A weaving sword, used for making cloth.
  • A whetstone, used to sharpen tools and weapons.

These items tell us a lot about the people who lived in Borve during the Viking Age. They show that the person buried there was important and had many valuable possessions.
