The Bengal loach (also called queen loach) is a type of fish. Its scientific name is Botia dario. It belongs to the loach family, called Botiidae.

You can find this fish in the Brahmaputra and Ganges river areas. These rivers flow through Bangladesh, Bhutan, and northern India. The Bengal loach is found in many places across these regions.

Where Bengal Loaches Live

Bengal loaches live in small rivers and streams. They are often found in the northern and eastern parts of Bangladesh. These areas are near the borders of India and Myanmar.

The fish mostly live in streams that flow into the Bengal part of the Ganges River. They have also been seen in Bhutan. In Bhutan, they are found in the Gaylegphug River. This river eventually flows into northern Bangladesh.

Protecting the Bengal Loach

In Bangladesh, the Bengal loach faces a challenge. It can be harmed by pesticides. These chemicals are used when growing rice.

To help protect these fish, the Bangladesh government has made rules. Since 1997, they have worked to stop pollution. These rules help keep streams and waterways clean for fish like the Bengal loach.

Keeping Bengal Loaches in Aquariums

The Bengal loach is a great fish for tropical aquariums. They are known for eating small snails that can become pests. They are also less shy than some other loach types.

These fish can grow up to about 6 inches long. It's best to keep them in groups of four or more. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.

You can feed them sinking pellets and algae wafers. They also enjoy fresh vegetables like cucumber and zucchini. Frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp are also good treats for them.
