Growing Trees: The Production Forest
Bottle Lake Forest is mostly filled with a type of pine tree called Pinus radiata. These trees were first planted here in the early 1900s. The forest covers a massive 800 hectares of land. That's like 800 rugby fields! It stretches from Burwood to Spencerville, all the way to Pegasus Bay on the east coast. The trees are grown for about 30 years. After that, they are cut down and used for wood. This work is managed by the Selwyn Plantation Board.
Nature and Wildlife in the Forest
Even though Bottle Lake Forest is a working forest, it's also home to many native plants and animals.
Plants of Bottle Lake
Walking through the forest, you'll see a soft carpet of native moss and lichens on the ground. There are also common ferns like bracken, pigfern, chain fern, and water fern. Closer to the coast, you might spot tough marram grass and bright yellow tree lupin. In autumn, the fallen pine needles and wood chips create a perfect home for different kinds of mushrooms to grow.
Forest Animals and Birds
Many different types of birds live in Bottle Lake Forest. The forest changes as trees grow and are harvested, so the types of birds you see can change too. To protect the native wildlife, there's a special program to control pests. This helps reduce the numbers of animals like cats, ferrets, possums, stoats, rabbits, rats, hares, and stray dogs. By managing these pests, the forest becomes a safer place for native birds and other creatures to thrive.
Fun and Adventure: The Recreational Park
Bottle Lake Forest Park is a super popular spot for outdoor fun. More than 400,000 people visit every year! It's free to enter and explore.
Tracks for Everyone
The forest has many tracks that lead all the way to the coast. Here, you can enjoy amazing ocean views and even access the beach. These tracks also connect to those in Spencer Park, which is just north of Bottle Lake Forest Park. Some tracks are wide logging roads that everyone can share. Others are special trails just for hiking and walking, horse trekking, or mountain biking. Right near the visitor centre, there's even a BMX course and a trials setup for bikes.
Mountain Biking Excitement
The mountain biking trails at Bottle Lake Forest are very popular and offer lots of variety. Some trails are one-way only to help keep riders safe and prevent crashes. The singletracks are narrow paths winding through the trees. The ground can be hard-packed dirt, gravel, or even loose sand, and it changes depending on the weather.
Because Bottle Lake is a working forest, sometimes tracks might change or close when trees are being harvested. Even though the tracks don't have big hills, the narrow paths, fast speeds, and curvy layout make it a unique and exciting place to ride. Bike races, like the well-known "Twilight Series," are also held here.
