Bouasone Bouphavanh (born 3 June 1954) is a politician from Laos. He served as the Prime Minister of Laos from 2006 to 2010. The Prime Minister is the head of the government in a country.
He was officially chosen for this important role by the National Assembly of Laos on 8 June 2006. This was part of a big change in the government. He took over from Bounnhang Vorachith, who then became the vice president. Before becoming Prime Minister, Bouasone was the first deputy prime minister. He also used to be the third deputy prime minister and led the State Planning Committee. He was replaced as Prime Minister on 23 December 2010 by Thongsing Thammavong. Today, Bouasone Bouphavanh leads a special group that studies how to develop Laos's economy.
Bouasone Bouphavanh's Early Life and Education
Bouasone Bouphavanh went to primary and secondary school in Salavan Province and Champasak Province. He studied there from 1962 to 1974. Later, he went to the Communist Party Institute in Moscow, which was in the Soviet Union. He studied there from 1985 to 1990.
Bouasone Bouphavanh's Political Journey
In 1975, Bouasone Bouphavanh was a student activist. This means he was a student who actively protested for change. He played a big part in protests against the government at that time. This happened just before Vientiane, the capital city, came under the control of the Pathet Lao group.
He joined the Lao People's Revolutionary Party on 9 April 1980. He is seen as someone who was mentored by a former party leader, Khamtai Siphandon.
Bouasone was chosen to be part of the LPRP Central Committee at the 6th National Congress. He kept his place on this committee until the 9th National Congress. The Central Committee is a key group that helps lead the party. At the 7th National Congress, he was also chosen for the LPRP Politburo. He was re-elected to the Politburo at the 8th National Congress. The Politburo is an even smaller, very powerful group within the party that makes important decisions.
