Bow City is a place in Alberta, Canada, that used to be a small village. It's located in the southeastern part of Alberta, right by the Bow River. You can find it on Highway 539.
It's about 31 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of the city of Brooks. There's also a small community called the Hamlet of Bow City located about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) to the east, on the other side of the Bow River.
The Story of Bow City
The Village of Bow City officially became a village on July 13, 1914. This was made official by Wilfred Gariepy, who was the Minister of Municipal Affairs at the time. A "minister" is like a government leader in charge of a specific area.
However, Bow City didn't stay a village for very long. It stopped being a village on April 17, 1918. This means it was only an official village for less than four years!
Did a Meteorite Hit Bow City?
It's pretty cool, but scientists think there might be a buried impact crater under Bow City! An impact crater is a big hole left in the ground when something like a meteorite crashes into Earth.
In December 2012, a scientist named Wei Xie from the University of Alberta shared some information about this. He presented a paper at a big meeting called the American Geophysical Union Conference. This paper described the hidden crater under Bow City.
How Many People Lived There?
|
We know a little bit about how many people lived in Bow City when it was a village. In the 1916 Census of Prairie Provinces, only 28 people were counted as living in Bow City. A "census" is like a big count of all the people in an area.
