A Look at Boxholm's History
The area around Boxholm has a very long history. People have lived here for thousands of years!
Early Life in Boxholm
The very first signs of people living here date back to the Stone Age. This was around 8,000 BC, a very long time ago. Later, during the Nordic Bronze Age, people built special stone graves called cists. They also created large areas where many graves were found.
Even more recently, during the Viking Age (around 800 to 1,000 AD), Vikings lived here. We know this because seven runestones from that time have been found and are still preserved. These stones have ancient writings carved into them.
Churches and the Name "Boxholm"
After Sweden became Christian, churches were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Many of the churches you see today in the area were first built during that period.
The name "Boxholm" itself first appeared in the 1500s. It was the name of a large manor (a type of estate) owned by a person named Arvid Stenbock. The name "Boxholm" comes from "Bock's holm." The word holm is an old Swedish word that means "islet" or a small island.
Industrial Growth
An important iron works (a factory that makes things from iron) was built in Boxholm in 1754. Because of this factory, a community started to grow around it. The biggest growth for the area happened between the 1850s and 1900. During this time, more people moved to Boxholm for work, and the town became much larger.
