Bradley Winslow's Early Life and Military Career
Bradley Winslow was born in 1831. When the American Civil War began, he decided to join the Union Army. The Union Army was the army of the northern states that fought to keep the United States together.
Joining the Fight
Winslow enlisted in the army on May 9, 1861. He started as a lieutenant, which is a junior officer rank. He quickly showed his skills and bravery.
A Leader in Battle
Winslow fought in some very important battles during the war. These included the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Siege of Petersburg. In these battles, soldiers tried to capture or defend important cities and areas.
As the war continued, Winslow was promoted. He eventually became the Colonel of the 186th New York Infantry Regiment. A colonel is a high-ranking officer who commands many soldiers.
Becoming a General
After the war, on January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson recognized Winslow's service. He nominated Winslow to be a brevet brigadier general of volunteers. A "brevet" rank is an honorary promotion, often given for brave service, but it doesn't always come with the higher pay of that rank. The United States Senate, which is part of the U.S. government, agreed to this promotion on March 12, 1866.
Life After the War
After his time in the military, Bradley Winslow continued to serve the public. He became involved in politics.

Winslow was elected to the New York State Senate. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state of New York. He served as a state senator for two terms, in 1880 and 1881.
