The Brador River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the town of Blanc-Sablon, which is part of the North Shore region. The river was once known as "River Bay Bradore." It is about 32 kilometers (20 miles) long.

Where is the Brador River?

The Brador River starts from a lake called "Lac Bradore Cabin." This lake is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) west of the border between Quebec and Labrador. Other lakes, like Philip Bridge and Shirt Tail, also feed water into Lac Bradore Cabin. Smaller streams, such as Stove Pipe Gulch and L. Bezeau, flow from the lake into the Brador River.

The river flows south, very close to the Labrador border. After it crosses Highway 138, it empties into the Bay of Brador. This bay is northeast of the town of Blanc-Sablon and connects to the Strait of Belle Isle. The river's mouth is about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) north of a small village called Brador. It is also about 13 kilometers (8 miles) west of the Quebec-Labrador border.

What Does "Brador" Mean?

The name "Brador" comes from the word "Labrador." It's like the "la" part was removed because people thought it was just the French word for "the." Early documents from New France sometimes used "la Brador" and sometimes "Labrador." Even Samuel de Champlain, a famous explorer, wrote it both ways in his travel notes.

In 1704, a fort called Fort Pontchartrain was built in Brador. This was done under the direction of Augustin Le Gardeur de Courtemanche.

The area around Blanc-Sablon has a long history related to the sea and military. Many places in the area use the name "Brador." For example, there's the village of Brador, the Bay of Brador, the Brador River, and even the "Hills Brador." There's also a "Bird Sanctuary of Brador Bay" and a "biodiversity reserve Hills Brador." The name "Brador River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968, by the Geographical Names Board of Québec.
