Braeden Anderson's Basketball Journey
High School Basketball Years
Braeden grew up in Okotoks, a town near Calgary, Canada. When he was 14, he was already a star player. He scored about 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in each game. By his senior year, he was considered one of the top five young basketball players in Canada.
At Wilbraham & Monson Academy, he averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game. He played in special games for top high school players. These included the All-Canada Classic and the Kentucky Derby Classic. People even called him "Mr. Canada Basketball." He was also part of Canada's senior Olympic team.
Braeden first planned to play for DePaul University. Later, he decided to join the Kansas Jayhawks. However, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) ruled him academically ineligible to play. This meant he could go to school and practice, but not play in games.
College Basketball Challenges
Since he couldn't afford tuition, Braeden started college at Fresno State. He played for the Bulldogs. He had to sit out his first season and missed many games in his second year. Braeden finally played his first college game on February 6, 2013. He played in 10 games, starting seven of them. He scored his highest points, 12, in a game against San Diego State.
Braeden faced a very serious challenge in 2013. On September 3, he broke his neck in a car accident. Doctors said he had a very small chance of leaving the hospital. He spent 28 days recovering at Stanford University Medical Center. He had four major surgeries and nine months of rehabilitation. During this time, he focused on his studies. He decided he wanted to become a corporate lawyer. Even with his injury, he earned a perfect 4.0 GPA that semester.
Amazingly, Braeden made a full recovery. He returned to play in the 2014-15 season. He played in 17 games, starting seven. He scored five points against Marist and grabbed six rebounds against Cal Poly.
In early 2015, Braeden left the basketball team. He wanted to focus on finishing his degree and getting ready for law school. He earned his undergraduate degree in forensic behavioral science.
Playing and Studying Law
Braeden scored very well on his Law School Admission Test (LSAT). He had an offer from Penn State's law school, but it didn't have a basketball program. He still had two years of college basketball eligibility left. So, he transferred to Seton Hall. This allowed him to use a scholarship to pay for his first two years of law school. This was possible because of a special NCAA rule for graduate students.
Braeden was known for playing "aggressively" and being a "selfless role player." He was good at setting screens and playing strong defense. He took 12 credits in his junior year. The dean of Seton Hall Law praised him as a great example for student athletes. During the 2015–16 season, he was the only active male NCAA Division I basketball player known to be studying law.
