Discovering Braggs: A Town's Past
The town of Braggs was first named Patrick on May 2, 1886. It was named after John J. Patrick, who was the first postmaster. On September 10, 1888, the town's name changed to Braggs. This new name honored Solomon Bragg, a well-known landowner in the area. For many years, Braggs was a quiet farming town. In its early days, some famous outlaws visited the community.
Camp Gruber's Role in World War II
A big change came to Braggs in 1942. The U.S. Army built a large military base called Camp Gruber just outside the town. Building the camp cost about $30 million. This brought a lot of new jobs and money to Braggs.
Camp Gruber was huge, covering about 60,000 acres (243 square kilometers). Thousands of new soldiers trained there during World War II. Part of the camp was also used to hold German soldiers who had been captured. After the war ended, these soldiers were sent back home. Camp Gruber closed down in 1947. This meant the good times for Braggs slowed down.
Camp Gruber Today: A Training Facility
However, Camp Gruber reopened in 1977. It became a training place for both reserve and active-duty military units. In 1987, it also became the home for the National Guard Air Assault School. This school teaches soldiers special skills for helicopter operations.
