Brampton Plantation was a large farm or estate in Savannah, Georgia. It was first established when America was still a group of colonies ruled by Britain. Plantations like Brampton often grew crops like cotton or tobacco. They relied on the forced labor of enslaved people.

Brampton Plantation was located near the Savannah River. It was about 3.5 miles northwest of downtown Savannah. Today, a cemetery still exists on the land where the plantation once stood.

The Story of Brampton Plantation

Brampton Plantation has a long history. It is closely linked to a man named Jonathan Bryan. He was an important landowner and a patriot during the American Revolution. Bryan was also a friend of James Oglethorpe, who founded the Savannah colony.

How Brampton Began

For the first fifteen years after Savannah was founded in 1733, the land was part of an Indian reservation. This means it was set aside for Native American communities.

In 1757, the land was divided up. It was then given to different planters, who were people who owned and managed plantations. David Graham was the first person to own the specific piece of land that later became Brampton Plantation.

Key Owners of Brampton

Jonathan Bryan became the owner of Brampton Plantation in 1765. He was a very influential person in the early days of Georgia.

Later, a man named John Garnier Williamson owned Brampton. Records from 1814 show he was the owner and that he owned enslaved people who were forced to work on the plantation. After John Garnier Williamson passed away, his son, John Postell Williamson, took over the plantation.
