Early Life and Music
Music became a part of Branco Mello's life through movies. His father often took him to watch musicals. The songs from these movies, along with music like Bossa Nova, shaped his early interests. His mother, Lu Brandão, who organized cultural events, also introduced him to many shows.
As a teenager, his friends gave him the nickname "Branco," which means "White." He listened to many different types of music. Some of his favorite artists included Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Doors, Stray Cats, The Clash, João Gilberto, Raul Seixas, Tim Maia, Cartola, and Zé Ketti.
He decided to learn to play the acoustic guitar. He met Marcelo Fromer at school, and they started writing songs together. They briefly studied linguistics at the University of São Paulo but left before finishing. They even entered a music festival in Rio de Janeiro with two songs, but they were not chosen. Around this time, they formed a group called Trio Mamão with Tony Bellotto. They also helped Serginho Groisman, who later became a famous TV host, produce shows for Brazilian musicians like Clementina de Jesus, Jorge Mautner, and Luiz Melodia. These artists were some of Mello's idols.
Music Career
In 1981, Branco Mello and eight friends started a band called Titãs. At first, they called themselves Titãs do Iê-Iê.
In 1982, Mello was one of the hosts of a show called TV Eclipse. This show made fun of TV programs and featured almost all the members who would later form Titãs do Iê-Iê. In this show, Mello played a host who was a mix of two famous Brazilian TV personalities.
His acting career in movies started in 1985. He had a small role in the film Areias Escaldantes, where he played a sushi chef and a manicurist.
During a break from Titãs, Mello formed another band called Kleiderman with Sérgio Britto, another Titãs member, and drummer Roberta Parisi. In Kleiderman, Mello sang and played the bass. This group had strong lyrics and a powerful sound. They released an album called Con el Mundo a mis Pies (With the World at my Feet). In 2000, he started another band called S. Futurismo. This band was mainly for fun, but they were invited to perform at a music festival in January 2001.
Later in 2001, Mello released a project for children. It was a book and CD called "Eu e Meu Guarda-Chuva" (Me and My Umbrella). The story is about a boy named Eugênio and his special umbrella. The CD has 10 songs that Mello created with Ciro Pessoa, one of the original founders of Titãs. Many famous artists sang on these songs, including Arnaldo Antunes, Elza Soares, Cássia Eller, Roberto Frejat, Toni Garrido, and Marcelo D2. A movie based on the book was also made.
In May 2018, Mello was diagnosed with a tumor in his throat. This meant he had to stop performing with the band for three months. He was able to return in time to record the Doze Flores Amarelas DVD. In November 2021, the tumor returned, and he spent 32 days in the hospital after another operation.
