Early Life and Music
Music became important to Branco Mello through movies. His dad often took him to watch musicals. The songs from these movies, along with Brazilian music styles like Bossa Nova, shaped his early tastes. His mother, Lu Brandão, who organized cultural events, also brought music into his life.
As a teenager, his friends nicknamed him "Branco" (which means "White"). He listened to many different types of music. Some of his favorite artists included Frank Sinatra, Gilberto Gil, Chuck Berry, The Doors, The Clash, and Raul Seixas.
Branco decided to learn the acoustic guitar. He met Marcelo Fromer at school, and they started making music together. They even tried to enter a music festival with their songs. At this time, they formed a group called Trio Mamão with Tony Bellotto. They also helped organize shows for famous Brazilian musicians.
Joining Titãs
In 1981, Branco Mello and eight friends started a band. They first called themselves Titãs do Iê-Iê, but later became known simply as Titãs. This band would become one of the most important rock bands in Brazil.
In 1982, Branco also worked on a TV show called TV Eclipse. It was a funny show that made fun of other TV programs. Branco played a presenter who was a mix of famous TV hosts.
His acting career continued in 1985. He had a small role in the movie Areias Escaldantes. He played a sushi chef and a manicurist in the film.
Other Projects and Challenges
During a break from Titãs, Branco Mello formed another band called Kleiderman. He played bass and sang in this group. They released an album called Con el Mundo a mis Pies (With the World at my Feet). Later, in 2000, he started another band just for fun, called S. Futuristmo. They even got invited to play at a big music festival.
At the end of 2001, Branco Mello released a special project for children. It was a book and CD called "Eu e Meu Guarda-Chuva" (Me and My Umbrella). The story is about a boy named Eugênio and his special umbrella. The CD had 10 songs that Branco made with Ciro Pessoa, another founder of Titãs. Many famous singers helped with the songs, like Arnaldo Antunes and Elza Soares. A movie was also made based on this book.
In 2018, Branco faced a health challenge. He had a tumor in his throat. This meant he had to take a break from the band for a few months to get better. He recovered and was able to return to music. In 2021, the tumor returned, and he had another operation. He spent time in the hospital but continued to recover and make music.
Family Life
Branco Mello lives in Rio de Janeiro. He lives with his wife, who is an actress and producer. He has two sons, Bento (born in 1991) and Joaquim (born in 1999). He also has a stepdaughter named Diana.
