What is the History of Brandon, South Dakota?
Brandon got its name from Brandon Township. A post office opened here way back in 1878. This was an important step in the area's development. The city was officially incorporated in 1973.

Brandon is nestled next to two important waterways: the Big Sioux River and Split Rock Creek. These rivers add to the natural beauty of the city.
The city covers a total area of about 5.41 square miles (14.01 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 5.37 square miles (13.91 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.10 square kilometers), is water.

Big Sioux Recreation Area
The Big Sioux Recreation Area is a state park west of Robert Bennis Elementary. It has a large forest along the Big Sioux River. You can find many hiking and biking trails here, along with bridges over the river. It also has camping sites and playgrounds for everyone to enjoy.

Interstate 90 is a very long highway that runs along the city's northern border. It's a major route for traveling east and west through Brandon. South Dakota Highway 11, also known as Splitrock Boulevard, runs north and south. Many businesses in Brandon are located along Splitrock Boulevard.
Other important roads include Holly Boulevard, Sioux Boulevard, and Aspen Boulevard. Aspen Boulevard connects Brandon to other towns to the east, like Valley Springs, South Dakota; Beaver Creek, Minnesota; and Luverne, Minnesota.

Since 2013, a large free car show called Automania used to take place along Holly Boulevard in the summer. In 2013, this event brought over 70,000 people to Brandon! AutoMania is now held about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east, in Valley Springs, SD.
