History

Valley Springs was founded on November 13, 1872, and incorporated on February 22, 1879. The city was named from nearby springs in the valley of Beaver Creek.

Geography

Valley Springs lies near the South Dakota—Minnesota state line. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.82 square miles (2.12 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 759 people, 306 households, and 202 families residing in the city. The population density was 925.6 inhabitants per square mile (357.4/km2). There were 327 housing units at an average density of 398.8 per square mile (154.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.9% White, 0.5% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

There were 306 households, of which 36.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 34.0% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.

Education

Valley Springs Public Schools are part of the Brandon Valley School District. The city is home to Valley Springs Elementary School, one of the district's four elementary schools.
