Early Life and School
Brandon Breaux grew up in the South Side of Chicago. He lived in the Chatham and Grand Crossing neighborhoods. He went to DePaul University and finished his studies in 2006.
Brandon Breaux's Art Career
Brandon Breaux's art often shows his culture from the South Side of Chicago. He also uses his art to talk about mental health, especially for Black communities.
Art for Chance the Rapper
Brandon Breaux designed the cover art for several of Chance the Rapper's music projects. He created the covers for the mixtapes 10 DAY (in 2012), Acid Rap, and Coloring Book. He also made the art for Chance's songs "Wala Cam", "65th and Ingleside", and "Work Out" in 2018.
For the Acid Rap cover, Breaux took the original photo himself. He said the picture happened by chance. He had given Chance a tie-dye tank top, hoping he would wear it.
The cover art for Coloring Book shows Chance holding his baby daughter. You can see Chance's face, but his baby is just outside the picture frame.
Influencing Other Artists
After Brandon Breaux created the covers for Chance the Rapper, other famous artists were inspired by his style. Artists like Drake, Kehlani, Miguel, and Troye Sivan have released album covers that show Breaux's influence.
His First Big Art Show
Breaux's first solo art show in the U.S. was called BIG WORDS. It featured paintings, prints, and even fashion designs. A reviewer for Dazed magazine noted how the show used words and figures to make viewers think in different ways.
Important Portraits and Collaborations
Brandon Breaux has created portraits for important people. He painted a portrait of fashion icon André Leon Talley for the cover of Ebony magazine.
He also painted a portrait of Civil Rights leader Congressman John Lewis. This painting was used for the cover of Lewis's last book, Carry On: Reflections for a New Generation.
In 2020, Breaux worked with the Museum of Contemporary Art to create a special collection of items.
In 2022, Brandon Breaux was chosen to be part of a special design program. This program, called Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab, is a partnership with Prada Group and other organizations.
Also in 2022, the Kennedy Center picked Breaux for their "Office Hours" program. This program helps artists develop their skills.
Public Art Projects
In August 2024, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) featured Breaux's art on trains. This public art show was called “Track(ed) Changes” and happened during the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
In 2024, Breaux continued working with Emerald South EDC. He created a large public mural of his SEEN oil painting in the Washington Park neighborhood. This mural even has augmented reality features, which means you can see digital things added to it using a phone or tablet.
Awards and Recognition
In 2022, Ebony magazine included Brandon Breaux in its POWER 100 list. This list celebrates important Black leaders.
