Breadalbane is a small country area in Tasmania, Australia. It is located in the Northern Midlands region. This quiet place is about 11 kilometers (about 7 miles) northeast of the town of Longford. In 2016, only 108 people lived in Breadalbane.

How Breadalbane Got Its Name

Breadalbane became an official place (or "locality") in 1959. It was named by Governor Macquarie. He named it after the Earl of Breadalbane, who was his wife's cousin. Before this official name, the area had other interesting names like 'Cocked Hat', 'The Springs', and 'Brumby's Plain'.

Early Life and Inns

A post office opened in Breadalbane on October 1, 1847. It served the community for many years before closing in 1968. In the early 1800s, the Breadalbane area faced some challenges with sheep theft.

During the colonial times, Breadalbane had three important inns. An inn was like a hotel or guesthouse where travelers could stay. These inns were called The Albion, The Temperance Hotel, and The Woolpack Inn. Today, only The Woolpack Inn is still standing.

Today, Breadalbane is known for an important roundabout. This roundabout helps direct traffic at the entrance to the city of Launceston and to Launceston Airport.
