About Breanna Sinclairé
Breanna Sinclairé grew up in Baltimore. Her parents played many musical instruments. Her grandmother especially encouraged her love for music. She helped Breanna sing in the Baptist church choir. Her grandmother also introduced her to opera music. She played recordings of famous African American singers. These included Jessye Norman, Marian Anderson, and Leontyne Price.
Breanna's grandmother also took her to see her first opera. It was called Madame Butterfly. This experience inspired Breanna. Her grandmother helped her get into the Baltimore School for the Arts. Even though she loved opera, her mother sent her to Kingswood University in Canada. Her mother hoped she would become a pastor there.
Breanna soon left that school. She spent several months in New York City. Finally, she was able to follow her dream of singing. She received a scholarship from the California Institute of the Arts. During her last year there, she began her journey of transitioning. This was sometimes difficult. But she found strength by aiming for a big role. She wanted to play the lead in the opera Carmen. She saw Carmen as a "sassy, confident woman."
Breanna then earned her master's degree. This was in 2014 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She received help from teachers like Ruby Pleasure. After studying at the San Francisco Opera, she began performing. She sings as a lyric soprano. This means she sings high notes with a clear, bright voice.
In June 2015, Breanna Sinclairé made history. She sang The Star-Spangled Banner at a professional sports game. This happened at the Oakland Athletics Stadium. About 30,000 people were there. It was a game between the Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres. She was the first transgender woman to sing the national anthem at such an event.
Breanna Sinclairé is also the subject of a documentary film. It is called Mezzo. The film was shown at the 2016 San Francisco Transgender Film Festival.
