Brian Keith Shaw (born March 22, 1966) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During his playing career, he was a versatile guard, mainly playing as a point guard for 14 seasons.

Early Life and College Basketball
Brian Shaw grew up in Oakland, California. He played basketball with other future NBA stars like Jason Kidd and Gary Payton. As a kid, he played at the East Oakland Youth Development Center. He went to Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland.
For college, Brian first attended St. Mary's College of California. Later, he transferred to UC Santa Barbara. In his final year, he was named the best player in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA). He led his team, the Gauchos, to their first-ever NCAA tournament.
Brian Shaw's NBA Playing Career
The Boston Celtics picked Brian Shaw as the 24th overall player in the 1988 NBA draft. He signed a one-year contract with the Celtics in 1988. In 1989, he played for an Italian team called Il Messaggero Roma for two years. He later returned to play for the Celtics.
During his time in the NBA, Brian played for several teams. These included the Celtics, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Portland Trail Blazers. He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers. Brian reached the NBA Finals four times. He went once with the Magic in 1995. He then won three NBA championships with the Lakers in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Brian also played for the US national team. He won a gold medal at the 1986 FIBA World Championship. In the final game against the Soviet Union, Brian made a crucial three-pointer. This shot helped the American team win by two points.
Winning Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers
Brian Shaw joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999. This reunited him with his former teammate, Shaquille O'Neal, from Orlando. Brian was a backup for the All-Star shooting guard Kobe Bryant. The Lakers had the best record in the league that season, winning 67 games.
Brian played in all 22 of the Lakers' playoff games. They beat the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns. Then they faced the Portland Trail Blazers in the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers were leading 3–1 in the series. But the Trail Blazers won games 5 and 6, tying the series. In game 7, the Trail Blazers were ahead by a lot in the fourth quarter. However, the Lakers made an amazing comeback. Brian Shaw helped with two important three-point shots. The Lakers won the game and went to the NBA Finals. They played against the Indiana Pacers. Brian even started in game 3 when Kobe Bryant was injured. The Lakers won the series 4–2, and Brian earned his first NBA championship.
Brian continued to play a key role for the Lakers in the next seasons. They won a second championship in the 2001 NBA Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Lakers won a third title in the 2001–02 NBA season. Brian retired after the 2002–03 NBA season.
Brian Shaw's Basketball Legacy
While playing for the Miami Heat on April 8, 1993, Brian Shaw set an NBA record. He made ten three-point field goals in one game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He finished that game with 32 points.
Starting in 1994, Brian was part of a famous play called "Shaw-Shaq Redemption." This was an alley-oop pass from Shaw to Shaquille O'Neal. Fans in both Orlando and Los Angeles loved this play. Shaquille O'Neal later said that Brian Shaw was the teammate he respected the most.
In 2000, during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Oakland, California, Brian received a special honor. He was given a key to the City of Oakland. His fellow Oakland natives, Jason Kidd and Gary Payton, also received this honor.
Coaching Career Highlights
Assistant Coach for the Los Angeles Lakers (2003–2011)
After retiring as a player, Brian Shaw worked as a scout for the Lakers. Then, he became an assistant coach for the team in the 2004–05 NBA season. He was considered for the head coach job when Phil Jackson retired. However, Mike Brown was chosen instead.
Indiana Pacers (2011–2013)
Brian left the Lakers to join the Indiana Pacers as an assistant coach. He was later promoted to associate head coach. Brian was highly respected by other NBA coaches and the media for his coaching skills.
Head Coach of the Denver Nuggets (2014–2015)
After two years with the Pacers, Brian Shaw became the head coach of the Denver Nuggets on June 25, 2013. He replaced former coach George Karl. He coached the Nuggets for almost two seasons.
Return to the Lakers (2016–2019)
In June 2016, Brian Shaw returned to the Los Angeles Lakers. He became the team's associate head coach under new head coach Luke Walton.
NBA G League Ignite (2020–2021)
On June 10, 2020, Brian Shaw was named the first-ever head coach of the G League Ignite. He led the team to a good record and a spot in the playoffs. He stepped down from this role after one season.
Los Angeles Clippers (2021–Present)
On September 24, 2021, Brian Shaw was announced as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Personal Life
On June 26, 1993, Brian faced a very sad time. His parents and sister died in a car accident in Nevada. His sister's daughter survived the crash, and Brian, with help from his aunt, helped raise her.
Brian Shaw is married to Nikki Shaw, who is a professional chef. They met when he joined the Orlando Magic in 1994 and got married in 1998. They have three children together.
