Early Life and Education

Briana Sewell was born in 1990 in Woodbridge, Virginia. Her parents both served in the United States Air Force. Her father retired as a senior master sergeant. Her mother became a lieutenant colonel. Her family lived in Panama for three years. After that, they moved to Lake Ridge, Virginia.

Sewell studied public policy at the College of William & Mary. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there. Later, she went to American University. She earned a Master of Public Administration degree from American University.

Political Career

Briana Sewell started her career in politics. She worked for U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly. She was his district director. In 2018, she started an organization. It was called the Virginia Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy. This group works for important things. These include paid time off for new parents. They also support paid sick days and affordable healthcare. Before becoming a legislator, she was a chief of staff. She worked for Ann Wheeler, who led the Prince William Board of County Supervisors.

Serving in the Virginia House of Delegates

In December 2020, Sewell announced she would run for office. She wanted to represent the 51st district. The person holding that seat, Hala Ayala, was retiring. Sewell received support from many important people. These included U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner. Congressman Gerry Connolly also supported her. Many state lawmakers, including Hala Ayala, endorsed her.

In November 2021, Sewell won the election. She defeated her opponent, Tim Cox. She won by about 6.9 percentage points. She officially took office on January 12, 2022. She joined the other members of the 162nd Virginia General Assembly.
