History of Bridgeville
The town of Bridgeville got its name from a very important bridge. This was the first bridge built over Chartiers Creek, which is a stream, at the southern end of what is now Washington Avenue. People would often meet at this bridge to trade goods. The saying "Meet me at the bridge" became common, and it gave the growing village its name around 1830.
The area was first known as St. Clair Township way back in 1763. Later, in 1806, the southern part of it became Upper St. Clair Township. For almost 100 years, Bridgeville was just a village within Upper St. Clair Township.
In the 1880s, mining started in the area, which helped the village grow. Bridgeville officially became its own borough on July 27, 1901. It separated from Upper St. Clair Township to become an independent town.
