Upper St. Clair is a special kind of township in southern Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It's about 8 miles (13 km) south of Downtown Pittsburgh. This area is known for being a nice place to live with a great school district. In 2020, about 21,160 people lived here.

About 9% of Upper St. Clair is made up of 14 parks and many fields. This totals about 733 acres of green space. The township shares its borders with six other communities. These include South Fayette Township to the west and Bridgeville to the northwest. To the north are Scott Township and Mt. Lebanon. Bethel Park is to the east. Finally, Peters Township in Washington County is to the south.

What's in a Name?

Upper St. Clair is part of what was once called St. Clair Township. This name came from General Arthur St. Clair. He was a famous general during the American Revolutionary War. He also served as the ninth President of the United States in Congress Assembled. During his time as president, important laws like the Northwest Ordinance and the United States Constitution of 1787 were passed.

A Look at History

The first European settler in the Upper St. Clair area was John Fife. He settled here in 1762. His home was near where Washington and McLaughlin Run roads are today.

St. Clair was one of the first townships in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. This was when the county was created in 1788. In 1836, St. Clair Township was split into two parts. These became Upper St. Clair and Lower St. Clair. People in Upper St. Clair wanted their own township. They hoped this would lead to better local government services. Over the years, parts of Upper St. Clair also separated to form new towns.

In 1973, Upper St. Clair Township adopted a special rule called a home rule charter. This means it can make more of its own local laws. It started on January 5, 1976.

The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 had its beginnings in Upper St. Clair. This was a protest by farmers against a tax on whiskey.

A group called the "St. Clair Guards" was formed in 1844. They were a volunteer militia company. Later, they became Company H of the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry.

Mines started operating in the community in the late 1800s. The first big neighborhood was built in March 1913. It was along Washington Road, close to streetcar service. By the 1930s, Upper St. Clair's school district offered regular nursing services.

Today, Upper St. Clair has many beautiful homes. It is known as one of the wealthier suburbs of Pittsburgh. The township was also a filming location for the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

The United States Census Bureau says the township covers about 9.8 square miles. Only a very small part, about 0.10%, is water.

Learning and Schools

Upper St. Clair has its own public school district for students from kindergarten to 12th grade. There are three elementary schools: Baker, Eisenhower, and Streams. There are also two middle schools: Boyce and Fort Couch. Finally, there is one Upper St. Clair High School.

A private Catholic-affiliated school is also in the township. It is named for St. Louise de Marillac. This school serves students from Pre-K to 8th grade. The Wesley School is another school here. It helps students with special needs from kindergarten to 8th grade.
