Stephen Chbosky (born January 25, 1970) is an American film director, screenwriter, and author. He is widely known for writing the popular coming-of-age novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999). He also wrote and directed the 2012 film based on his book. Chbosky directed the heartwarming movie Wonder (2017) and the 2021 film version of Dear Evan Hansen. His first psychological horror novel, Imaginary Friend, was released in October 2019.

Chbosky was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the nearby town of Upper St. Clair Township, Pennsylvania. His parents are Lea and Fred Chbosky. He has a sister named Stacy.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower was Chbosky's first novel. It was published in 1999 and quickly became popular with teenagers. By 2000, it was a top-selling book for MTV Books. By 2013, over two million copies had been printed, and it was available in 31 languages.
The book has also faced some challenges. It has been removed from some schools because of its themes. It has appeared on the American Library Association's list of frequently challenged books many times.
