Bridgewater Township is a special kind of local government area called a civil township in Washtenaw County, which is in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2020, about 1,615 people lived here.

History of Bridgewater Township

Bridgewater Township was officially started in 1832. It was first called Hixon Township. This name came from Colonel Daniel Hixon, who was one of the first people to settle there.

In 1833, the township got its current name, Bridgewater Township. It was named after a place called Bridgewater, New York.

At first, the township covered a larger area. But in 1837, Manchester Township was created from its western part. The first building for the township government was built in 1856. The building you see today was rebuilt in 1882 on the same spot. It is now a special place called a Michigan State Historic Site. This means it's an important historical landmark.

By 1850, there were two small towns in the township: Bridgewater and River Raisin. River Raisin had mills, a train station, a post office, and some shops. However, the River Raisin community no longer exists today.
