Parent range North Shore Mountains

The Britannia Range is a group of mountains. It is part of the larger North Shore Mountains. You can find it near Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada. This range runs along the eastern side of Howe Sound. It is also the source of the name for Britannia Beach. This town is located towards the northern end of the range.

Discover the Britannia Range

The Britannia Range is a subrange, which means it is a smaller part of a bigger mountain system. It starts near Deeks Lake and Hanover Mountain. This area is north of Brunswick Mountain. Brunswick Mountain is the highest peak near the Cypress Mountain ski resort. However, Brunswick Mountain is not actually part of the Britannia Range itself.

Where is the Britannia Range Located?

The Britannia Range has clear boundaries. To the north, it is bordered by the Stawamus River. To the east, it reaches Loch Lomond on the upper Seymour River. Its western side faces Howe Sound. This location makes it a prominent feature in the landscape north of Vancouver.

How Did the Britannia Range Get its Name?

The name of the Britannia Range has an interesting history. It was named by Captain Richards. He named it after a famous ship called HMS Britannia. This was a very large warship with 100 guns. The HMS Britannia was involved in important naval battles. These included the Battle of St. Vincent in 1797 and the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Many mountains within the Britannia Range also have names that connect to British royalty. For example, you will find mountains named Hanover and Windsor. These names refer to royal families from Britain's past.

Famous Peaks in the Range

One of the most well-known mountains in the Britannia Range is Sky Pilot Mountain. This peak has a unique horn shape. It is very easy to spot for drivers on BC Highway 99. You can see it clearly when driving south from Whistler towards Squamish.
