Britt is an unincorporated area in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. An unincorporated area means it's a community that doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's usually managed by the county or a larger township.
Britt is located about 11 miles north of the city of Virginia. It's a community that has grown quite a bit over time.
Where is Britt Located?
The original center of Britt was near the intersection of Saint Louis County Road 68 and Jarvinen Road. This spot is in the southwest part of Sandy Township. Britt Creek, a local waterway, flows through this area.
Britt has expanded from a small place with just a post office and a carpet store. Now, it's a large community covering a wide area. It is generally found north of the city of Virginia. It also stretches north-northwest of Wuori Township.
The Britt area starts near Highway 169 (MN 169) close to Florenton. It then goes west past U.S. Highway 53 near Sand Lake. Britt now includes the unorganized territory of Sand Lake. This part is centered around Highway 53. The area near Highway 169 is the northern part of Wouri Township.
Roads and Natural Surroundings
Several important roads run through the Britt area. These include Saint Louis County Roads 65, 68, and 106. Road 106 is also known as the Britt Bypass.
Britt is also located within the beautiful Superior National Forest. This forest is a large protected area. It is known for its many trees, lakes, and wildlife.
Lakes in the Britt Area
The Britt area is home to many natural lakes. Some of the larger ones include Lake Fourteen, Lake Leander, and Lake Little Fourteen. Other lakes are Dark Lake, Arrowhead Lake, and Sand Lake. You can also find Little Sand Lake, Sandy Lake, and Little Sandy Lake. Moose Lake and Clear Lake are also in the area. There are many other smaller lakes too.
Part of the Minntac Tailings Basin Cell One is also located in southern Britt. This is a facility related to mining operations.
