Early Life and Music Beginnings
Brittney Spencer grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She loved music from a young age, especially singing in church. She told Baltimore magazine that church was a great place for her to learn to sing. Her family was also very musical; her dad was in a quartet band.
A friend from church introduced Brittney to The Chicks, which sparked her interest in country music. From there, she also became a fan of artists like Taylor Swift. In her teenage years, Brittney went to special schools for the arts, like the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. There, she learned to play the guitar and piano. She also took singing lessons to learn how to sing in a recording studio.
Brittney started her career by singing background vocals for other artists, including Jason Nelson. In February 2013, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville is a big city for country music, and she wanted to become a full-time country artist there.
Becoming a Star
After moving to Nashville, Brittney Spencer went to Middle Tennessee State University. While studying, she also worked as a vocal coach. She helped students from families who didn't have a lot of money learn to sing. She also found jobs singing background vocals for famous artists like Christopher Cross and Carrie Underwood. Brittney performed in many clubs and places around Nashville.
In 2020, Brittney became very famous after she posted a video on Twitter. In the video, she sang a cover of "Crowded Table" by The Highwomen. The video was watched over 150,000 times! Famous singers like Maren Morris and Amanda Shires shared the video and said how much they loved Brittney's performance. Brittney told Billboard that she just loves to sing and write songs. She was surprised by how much attention the video got.
Later in 2020, Brittney released her first extended play (EP) called Compassion. An EP is like a mini-album with a few songs. Around this time, she also started her first tour, which she called "In a Perfect World." In late 2021, Brittney performed with Mickey Guyton and Madeline Edwards at the 55th Annual Country Music Association Awards. They sang a song called "Love My Hair."
In November 2022, Brittney Spencer signed a big record deal with Elektra Records. This was a huge step in her career! She released another EP the next day. It included new songs and a cover of "Cowboy Take Me Away" by The Chicks. In 2024, she released her first full-length album called My Stupid Life.
