History of Brooklyn
Brooklyn has a unique history with some "firsts" in the United States. In 1966, it was the first city to have a law requiring people to wear seat belts. Later, in 1999, it became the first place to have a law about using cell phones while driving.
A clothing factory, Hugo Boss, located in Brooklyn, faced closure in 2009. This would have moved many jobs overseas to Turkey. However, the workers' union and the City of Brooklyn worked together. They reached an agreement, and the factory reopened shortly after.
Elvis Presley's First Northern Concert
Brooklyn High School became famous on October 20, 1955. This was when Elvis Presley performed in its auditorium. It was his very first concert in the northern part of the United States. People also believe it was the first time one of his concerts was filmed.
Elvis was not the main performer at this concert. Other popular acts like Bill Haley & His Comets, The Four Lads, and Pat Boone also played. It was almost a year later that Elvis first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Fifty years later, on October 20, 2005, some of the original performers returned. They celebrated the anniversary of that famous visit. The "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum" even named Brooklyn High School a national rock 'n' roll landmark because of this event.
