The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is a famous ice cream shop in Brooklyn, New York City. It first opened in a cool old building. This building used to be a 1922 fireboat house. It was located on the Fulton Ferry Landing Pier in the Dumbo neighborhood. This spot is very close to the famous Brooklyn Bridge. After a short time in a different location, the factory is now back. It reopened across the street from its original historic spot.

The ice cream shop was started by its owner, Mark Thompson, in 2001. Its first home was a special building. This building was an old fireboat house. Fireboats are like boats that help put out fires on the water. This historic building was on the Fulton Ferry landing. It was a very old and important spot in Brooklyn. Firefighters used to practice there.

In June 2019, another ice cream shop took over the original location. But the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory stayed in business! It moved to a new temporary spot. This new place was in the Greenpoint neighborhood. Then, in March 2021, the factory moved back. It reopened at 14 Old Fulton Street. This new spot is right across the street from its first home.

About the Ice Cream

The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory makes all its ice cream fresh. Even its hot fudge is made right there! Their ice cream is made in an old-fashioned way. It has less butterfat and no eggs. They make it in small batches. This means they make only a little at a time. They usually have eight flavors. These include chocolate, vanilla, butter pecan, and strawberry. The factory says they don't use any preservatives.

The New York Times newspaper once wrote about their ice cream. They said it was "creamy, ethereally light and perfectly balanced." They also said it "practically float[s] into your mouth."

Awards and Praise

Many guides and newspapers have praised the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. The book New York City for Dummies called its ice cream "the best ice cream in New York." The Sunday Times and Frommer's New York City 2011 also agreed. They said it was the best in New York. Even a former politician, Fernando Ferrer, really likes their French vanilla ice cream.
