Brooks' Economy and Jobs

In the early 1900s, Brooks started to grow because of the railroad. Many new businesses opened. These included a bank, a drugstore, and shops where people could process crops. There were also places to make tools, like blacksmith shops.

Farming was the main way people made a living. Cotton was the most important crop for a long time. But in 1921, tiny insects called boll weevils attacked the cotton plants. They destroyed the crops, which caused a big economic problem for the town. Brooks even lost its town charter for a while.

When the Great Depression hit the country, Brooks had already been struggling for eight years. Things started to get better in 1939 when electricity came to the town. Around this time, Brooks got its town charter back.

The town also grew because of the airline industry. People who worked for airlines in Atlanta started buying large farms in Brooks. Farming changed too. Farmers began raising cattle instead of just growing cotton.
