History of Brooktrails
Brooktrails was once a place where a lot of trees were cut down, especially from the 1880s to the mid-1900s. After that, in the 1970s, it was created as a special "township" under California law. It was advertised as a fun mountain getaway for people from San Francisco.
Nature and Parks in Brooktrails
Brooktrails has about 6,600 plots of land, ranging from small areas (about a third of an acre) to larger ones (up to 10 acres). The smaller plots are mostly surrounded by the Brooktrails Redwood Park. This park is a huge forest area, about 2,600 acres, filled with trees like tan oak, Douglas fir, and redwood.
The community is proud of its nature. Brooktrails has over 30 hiking trails, perfect for exploring the outdoors. There are also two lakes, Lake Emily and Lake Ada Rose. These lakes are important because they store water for the community's water treatment plant. You can also find a small market and a deli in Brooktrails.
Community Services
The Brooktrails Township Community Services District helps run the community. It's managed by a group of five elected people. They make sure residents have water, sewer services, and fun recreational activities.
In September 2020, everyone in Brooktrails had to leave their homes. This was because of a big wildfire called the Oak Fire that threatened the area.
Geography of Brooktrails
Brooktrails is located in the middle of Mendocino County. It sits on hills to the west of a place called Little Lake Valley. The fire department and golf course in Brooktrails are about 1,634 feet (498 meters) above sea level. However, the western edge of the community goes up to almost 3,000 feet (914 meters) high.
It is about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) north of the town of Willits. The United States Census Bureau says that Brooktrails covers an area of about 7.3 square miles (18.9 square kilometers). Most of this area (99.36%) is land, and a small part (0.64%) is water.
