History of Brown City
Brown City started in 1879 as a train station. It was part of the Port Huron and Northwestern Railway. This railway later became part of the Pere Marquette Railroad.
The area quickly grew because it was a good place to ship lumber and grains. Brown City became a village in 1887. It then became a city in 1907.
Trains like the Marquette Flyer carried people and mail. They traveled between Detroit and Ludington. Later, in the 1920s, the Pere Marquette railway joined the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
For a long time, Brown City was governed by a special rule called the "4th Class City Act." But in 1998, the people living in Brown City voted to change how their city was run.
In 1998, a company called the Huron and Eastern Railway bought a train line. This line went from Saginaw to Brown City. Part of the old line is still there, but it is not used for trains anymore.
