Brown: A Historic Settlement
- Brown was settled in 1860. It even had a post office for a short time! When it first opened in 1871, it was called "Up River." But just a month later, the name was changed to Brown. The post office closed in 1874.
Chief: Near a Lake
- Chief was another small community. It had its own post office starting in 1881. This community was located to the east of a lake called Chief Lake.
Conger: A Former Post Office Town
- Conger also had a post office. It operated from 1876 until 1889.
Norwalk: A Long-Standing Community
- Norwalk is a community in the northwest part of the township. It's located at coordinates 44°20′30″N 86°09′44″W / 44.34167°N 86.16222°W. A post office first opened here on October 5, 1858, under the name "Portage Creek." The name changed to Norwalk on January 21, 1863, and the post office served the community for many years, closing on December 27, 1968.

The important Manistee River flows right through the middle of the township, heading west towards Lake Michigan. You can also find Chief Lake along the northern border of the township, though most of it is actually in a neighboring area called Bear Lake Township.
