This means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or a borough. It's part of a larger area called West Earl Township. Brownstown is also a "census-designated place" (CDP). This is a special area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau just for counting people. In 2010, about 2,816 people lived there. By 2020, the population grew to 3,081.

Where is Brownstown Located?

Brownstown is in the middle part of Lancaster County. It's in the western section of West Earl Township. The community is about 5 miles (8 km) southwest of a town called Ephrata. It is also about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Lancaster, which is the main city and county seat.

Major Roads and Travel

The main road that goes through Brownstown is Pennsylvania Route 772. This road is also known as South State Street. It goes northwest about 6 miles (10 km) to Lititz. If you go southeast on PA 772, you'll reach Leola in about 3 miles (5 km).

A big four-lane highway, U.S. Route 222, runs just west of Brownstown's center. You can get onto US 222 from PA 772. This highway leads northeast about 24 miles (39 km) to Reading. It also goes southwest to Lancaster. Another road, Route 272, runs next to and northwest of Route 222. The spot where Route 772 and Route 272 meet is a very busy area in Lancaster County.

Waterways and Land Area

Brownstown covers about 2.5 square miles (6.6 square kilometers) of land. A small part, about 0.05 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water. The Conestoga River forms the southern edge of the community. The Cocalico Creek forms the western edge. This creek also marks the western boundary of West Earl Township. It joins the Conestoga River southwest of the town center. All these waterways are part of the larger Susquehanna River watershed.
