About Brownville Junction

Where is Brownville Junction?

Brownville Junction is in the west-central part of Brownville, Maine. It sits on the west side of the Pleasant River. This river flows south into the Piscataquis River, which is part of the larger Penobscot River system.

Maine State Route 11 goes through Brownville Junction. This road connects the community to other nearby places. For example, it's about 3 miles (5 km) south to Brownville village and 7 miles (11 km) to Milo. If you travel northeast, it's about 31 miles (50 km) to Millinocket.

A Bit of History

Brownville Junction started in 1889 because of the railway. The Canadian Pacific Railway built a line called the International Railway of Maine. This railway was a very important part of its plan to connect Montreal, Quebec, Canada, all the way to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.

The new railway line crossed an older one, the Bangor and Katahdin Iron Works Railway, right where Brownville Junction is today. This crossing point became the center of the new community. Over the years, the ownership of these rail lines changed. Today, they are owned by the CPKC Railway.

Brownville Junction was officially recognized as a "census-designated place" before the 2020 census. In 2020, about 506 people lived there.
